Adopt Blue

playful boy with health challenges

Blue is an adorable, affectionate, playful, curious, mischievous and very active eight month-old boy who loves other cats and dogs. Almost any home environment will do, so long as he has friends to zoom around and wrestle with.

background

Blue was part of a four-kitten surrender, from a home in the north end that was, essentially, a kitten mill. In exchange for spaying the females, we agreed to take the siblings. This helped a family who really didn’t want anymore kittens.

Blue, like his siblings, started out with a really bad case of diarrhea. It took a long time for his brother and sisters to develop normal stool. A campylobacter infection was to blame for the kittens’ problems. All were dehydrated and underweight. But with vet care, a proper diet and extra fluids, they caught up – except little Blue.

Health

Several rounds of antibiotics and a novel protein diet didn’t help his diarrhea. We tried a no-carb diet, high carb diet and steroid trial, which also failed. Next up were vitamin B injections, pre-and probiotics and digestive enzymes. Still, there were no results. Bloodwork revealed one very high liver value which indicated some kind of inflammation was at work. He also had an abdominal ultrasound that did not turn up anything remarkable. Blue has gained weight over time, but much more slowly than his cohort. He was constantly drinking, but that has since improved. Even though his preference is dry cat food, he isn’t guzzling water anymore. His second round of bloodwork showed his liver value has decreased and is almost within normal limits. He is currently on liver, and gastrointestinal support supplements. We hope his liver value will normalize very soon.

This little sweetheart has also been diagnosed with lymphocytic-plasmacytic gingivitis – a painful condition of the gums. The cause is unknown, but it appears cats with this condition are allergic to, or reactive to, bacteria on their teeth, necessitating the removal of all teeth behind the canines. Once his liver value has normalized, Blue will be having that surgery so he can be more comfortable.

Blue is on a canned food diet, plus special dry cat food to help him gain weight. He is meal fed, rather than free-fed, as he will ignore the canned food if you let him. He uses softwood litter pellets for cat litter and keeps himself shiny and clean.

Blue is only available to a foster-to-adopt situation until his liver values are within a normal range and he has had his dental surgery. We want to make sure he gets the care he needs to resolve his condition. Any home considering taking him on must be able to tolerate a cat with chronic loose stool.

socialization

Blue is a treat to watch. He will play with you all day long and loves being carried around. Dogs don’t scare him and he has no problem going to the vet in a cat carrier. All his foster cat friends chase him about the house. Blue welcomes all toys and if he can’t find any, he’ll make his own out of random objects. He is especially fearless, and likes to climb. Being young and curious can get you into trouble. For that reason, knowing where he is, and what he’s doing, will keep him safer .
